How was your week?

Things have been really good over here!

I had a great catch up with my old Thunderbirds teammates last weekend. Everyone is exactly the same in the best possible way - there's just a few more babies amongst the team!

We also celebrated my Mum for Mothers Day. Joey made the most beautiful meal with an 8hr slow cooked lamb shoulder being the star of the show. The way it fell off the bone was the stuff of dreams. She assures me it's very easy to make so I'll share the recipe with you soon.

Enough of last week, let's get into Issue #20 of The List!

This week I'm sharing:

  • A quote I loved about non-material needs and ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’

  • My favourite newsletter (apart from this one)

  • My new black boots

  • The unhealthiest recipe I have ever shared

I hope you enjoy this weeks issue!

I was having a conversation recently about ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’.

It's so easy to look at what everyone has and use it as a measure for our own happiness or value. We tell ourselves “when we get X, then we'll be happy”. We use non-material things as a barometer of what we need in order to feel worthy and accepted.

I'm all for having nice things (the beauty! the joy!) but it's when we attach our self-worth, value or identity to them that things can get difficult. I am just as susceptible as anyone, here's a frivolous example...

I've never coveted a designer bag, but recently noticed a lot of friends with them. I began to think I needed one and became a little self conscious about my non-designer bags. Would I be happier with a Louis Vuitton tucked under my arm?

How had I gone from never thinking about designer bags, to believing it was something missing from my life?  I had changed what I was focusing on.

When we focus on lack, it's all we see. Instead of buying a bag to fill a void I chose to refocus on all of the things I do have, especially the non-material, and the need went away.

If I do get a designer bag, it will be because I love it, not because I need it to feel better about myself. That's an internal job :)
