Two weeks ago I shared a reel that went viral (for me, anyway).
At the time of writing it’s had 386,000 views. (You can view it HERE.)
In it I shared how I got my dream role on Fox Sports. All thanks to sending one message to one woman who backed me in.
That person was Australian Netball Legend, Cath Cox.
I worked with Cath on the weekend, and shared how crazy it was that this premise of ‘women supporting women’ had struck such a huge chord with people.
In Cath’s words: for Netballers, it’s normal.
Women Supporting Women: The Norm in Netball
As Netballers, we’ve been surrounded by strong women forever. It’s one of the few sports that’s female dominated - from the top-tier competition being solely female, to the players, coaches, support staff, GM’s and CEO’s. Women have been given the platform to lead.
As athletes, we learned from a young age that you go further together. The culture of netball (at the highest level) is one of acceptance, respect and professionalism.
Unlike basketball, you can’t hog the ball and take all the shots. In netball it’s literally against the rules to hold the ball for longer than 3 seconds or pass to yourself.
We are taught, inadvertently, that we need each other to succeed.
Surround yourself with champions
In a world where it can be dog eat dog, Netball has been a place to champion others. In supporting, encouraging and pushing your teammates to be their best - they do the same for you.
We are who we surround ourselves with. Put yourself in an environment of people who are displaying elite behaviours, and you can’t help but adopt them too.
It’s a Netball thing?
What Cath did for me meant so much, but she’s done similar things for countless others too. And she’s not the only one.
